High-Profile Trial: Jeffrey Donaldson Faces Historical Sex Offence Charges

The trial against Jeffrey Donaldson, a prominent former Northern Ireland politician, began with the prosecution laying out 18 historical sex offense charges. The proceedings commenced on Wednesday, highlighting allegations and Donaldson's stance during police interviews.

As one of Northern Ireland's most recognizable figures and a long-serving Member of Parliament, Donaldson fiercely denies the serious accusations, which include one count of rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency. The alleged incidents involve two complainants and span over two decades, from 1985 to 2008.

The court proceedings are predicted to last through June. Separately, Eleanor Donaldson, Jeffrey's wife, will face a trial of the facts due to mental health constraints, as ruled by Judge Paul Ramsey. Eleanor, accused of aiding and abetting rape, has declared her innocence.
