France to Abolish Long-Standing Colonial Slavery Code

The French National Assembly is preparing to vote on the repeal of the Code Noir, a notorious decree from 1685 that classified enslaved people as property within the French colonies. Despite the formal abolition of slavery in 1848, this legislation was never officially repealed, a fact that has shocked many.

The bill's passage would mark an official end to a law that sanctioned the exploitation and dehumanization of Black individuals as chattel. This legal artifact reflects the dark history of France's colonial past, with echoes still felt in the disparity and systemic racism experienced by many in the country's overseas territories.

Max Mathiasin of Guadeloupe, who spearheaded the repeal initiative, regards this legislative action as an essential step in honoring the humanity of ancestors who suffered under this law. He argues that true national equality remains unfulfilled within these regions. Prominent voices continue to advocate for acknowledgement and reparations for slavery's lingering impact.

Critics argue that simply erasing the law does little to address underlying issues of systemic racism and inequality faced by descendants of the enslaved. Prominent figures like Max Relouzat emphasize the need for more substantive change beyond symbolic gestures to truly reconcile with the historic wrongs committed by the French Empire.
