Maharashtra FDA Cracks Down on Food Adulteration: Dozens Detained

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has undertaken extensive enforcement actions across the state, arresting 33 people and sealing 27 businesses involved in food adulteration and the sale of banned substances, such as gutkha. The FDA also announced plans for a mobile app to report unsafe food practices.

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its efforts against food adulteration and the sale of banned substances across the state, resulting in the arrest of 33 individuals and the sealing of 27 establishments. These operations were carried out in multiple divisions, including Mumbai and Pune, as announced by the FDA.

During the operations, officials inspected 53 establishments, with 34 identified as violating regulations. This led to 25 First Information Reports (FIRs) being registered, and contraband valued at approximately Rs 20.57 lakh was confiscated. The FDA also seized 60 items under the Food Safety and Standards Act, valued at Rs 28.78 lakh.

In specific incidents, offenders were caught manufacturing artificial milk using edible oil, and mangoes were found being artificially ripened with chemicals. Several establishments were penalized for operating without licenses or in unsanitary conditions. The FDA has issued a strong warning against future violations and plans to introduce a mobile app to facilitate public reporting of such issues.
