An investigation has uncovered that a federal judge engaged in inappropriate conduct within court premises, having an affair with a senior police officer during business hours. This affair, which included sexual encounters overheard by staff, led to a private reprimand for the judge.

The Judicial Council of the 11th Judicial Circuit, covering Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, issued the reprimand, later affirmed by the Judicial Conference's Committee on Judicial Conduct and Disability. Although the judge denied and later admitted to the relationship, they promised to abstain from similar misconduct in the future and pen apologies to affected clerks. The judge has also pledged to avoid attending political events and to stop considering a leadership role on the Judicial Conference committee.

While this discipline has been criticized by some, including a legal expert who deemed it lenient, it underscores the judiciary's responsiveness to ethical breaches. The ongoing dialogue raises questions about judicial accountability and the balance between discretion and transparency.
