Uttarakhand HC Rejects Challenge to Kumbh Label for 2027 Event in Haridwar

The Uttarakhand High Court has rejected a petition objecting to the branding of Haridwar's 2027 Ardh Kumbh as a full Kumbh, a move allegedly aimed at securing more central funds. The court left room for further discussion by allowing the petitioner to address concerns with the state government directly.

The Uttarakhand High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the decision to classify the 2027 Ardh Kumbh event in Haridwar as a Kumbh Mela. This rebranding is reportedly intended to secure increased financial support from the central government.

While rejecting the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Ashok Tripathi, a Haridwar local, the court permitted him to present his concerns to the state government. The division bench highlighted that the issue involves deep religious connotations, advising the petitioner to withdraw the plea voluntarily.

Tripathi's petition argued that the distinction between an Ardh Kumbh and a full Kumbh is significant, as the events follow a 12-year and a 6-year cycle, respectively. He expressed concern that branding the 2027 event as a Kumbh could mislead the public and disrupt long-held traditions, especially regarding the exclusive 'Shahi Snan' ritual.

The PIL sought a court directive to prevent authorities from promoting the 2027 gathering as a Kumbh Mela, underlining that such a move could compromise religious customs and exclude ordinary devotees.
