The Environment Ministry in India has decided to reinforce the oversight of environmental projects in Mizoram by prolonging the terms of the state's environmental regulatory bodies. The tenure for members and the chairman of the State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAA) and the State Expert Appraisal Committees (SEAC) has been expanded by an additional six months.

According to a notification from the ministry published recently, these panels, which originally served for three-year terms, will now continue their crucial work for three years and six months in total. The SEIAA is responsible for granting environmental clearances, while the SEAC advises the authority by evaluating project impacts.

The extension is part of the central government's efforts to ensure that environmental controls in Mizoram remain robust and effective up to December 12, 2026. However, this could be subject to change if these bodies are reconstituted prior to this date.
