Indian Railways observed World Environment Day 2026 with a strong focus on sustainability, cleanliness and responsible environmental practices, unveiling a new framework aimed at improving waste management across one of the world's largest rail networks.

At a special programme held at the Ministry of Railways, Railway Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Shri Satish Kumar launched the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 – Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Booklet, a comprehensive guide designed to strengthen waste handling practices across railway establishments. The initiative reflects Indian Railways' broader effort to make environmental responsibility an integral part of its daily operations while supporting the country's sustainability goals.

New SOPs Aim to Standardise Waste Management Practices

The newly released booklet has been developed to provide a uniform approach to waste management throughout the railway system. Officials said the guidelines will help improve environmental compliance, encourage sustainable practices and ensure consistent implementation of waste management measures across zones and divisions.

Addressing railway officials and staff, Shri Satish Kumar stressed that environmental sustainability should not remain limited to policy discussions but must become part of routine operational culture. He called upon all Zonal Railways to ensure the timely and effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. He also emphasized the need for stronger monitoring systems and the adoption of innovative practices that can improve waste collection, segregation, processing and disposal across railway premises. According to officials, consistent implementation of these measures can contribute significantly to reducing the environmental footprint of railway operations.

The launch comes at a time when Indian Railways is expanding several green initiatives, including energy-efficient infrastructure, renewable energy adoption and improved waste management systems at stations and railway facilities.

Top Rail Zones Honoured for Cleanliness Efforts

The programme also included an environmental pledge ceremony, where officers and employees reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a cleaner and greener railway network. Participants were encouraged to actively support initiatives that promote sustainability, resource conservation and environmental awareness. A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the Swachhata Pakhwada Awards, which recognize outstanding performance by railway zones in cleanliness and sanitation campaigns.

North-Eastern Railway emerged as the top-performing zone and received the first prize for its efforts during the cleanliness drive. North-Western Railway secured the second position, while Southern Railway was awarded third place for its contribution to maintaining high standards of sanitation and cleanliness. The event concluded with a renewed resolve to strengthen environmental stewardship across the railway system. Officials noted that sustainable waste management, cleaner infrastructure and responsible resource use will remain central to Indian Railways' long-term vision of building an environmentally conscious and future-ready transport network.
