ILO Launches Global Platform to Support Just Transition Policies
The Just Transition Policy Gateway was officially launched on 11 June during a High-Level Ministerial Meeting of the International Advisory Board of the Key Intervention on Just Transition under the Global Coalition for Social Justice.
A new global knowledge platform designed to help countries develop and implement people-focused transition policies has been launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO), marking a significant step in efforts to support workers, businesses, and communities as economies undergo major environmental and economic changes.
The Just Transition Policy Gateway was officially launched on 11 June during a High-Level Ministerial Meeting of the International Advisory Board of the Key Intervention on Just Transition under the Global Coalition for Social Justice.
The platform has been created to help policymakers move beyond policy documents by sharing the real-world experiences, challenges, negotiations, and lessons that shape successful transition strategies.
Turning Policy Experience Into Practical Action
The Gateway responds to growing demand from governments and social partners for practical examples of how just transition policies are developed and implemented. Users can access not only policy frameworks and strategies but also insights into the decision-making processes behind them.
The platform highlights experiences from countries working to strengthen skills development, expand social protection, improve labour market institutions, and encourage social dialogue while managing economic and environmental change.
ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo said countries around the world are increasingly designing policies that support decent work, strengthen social cohesion, and promote economic transformation. He noted that social and economic considerations have become essential elements of sustainable development pathways.
Sharing Challenges and Solutions Across Countries
Leaders involved in the launch stressed the importance of learning from one another's experiences.
Barbados Labour Minister Colin Jordan said countries should openly share both successes and challenges, noting that policy development is rarely a straightforward process. He said collective learning can help governments move forward more effectively.
Germany's State Secretary for Labour and Social Affairs, Lilian Tschan, described the platform as a valuable combination of policy exchange and practical support. She said successful structural transformation depends on putting people at the centre of decision-making and ensuring decent work remains part of the solution.
Employers and trade unions also welcomed the initiative. Representatives from Pakistan and Nigeria encouraged organisations to actively contribute their experiences and make use of the growing knowledge network to strengthen national transition efforts.
Building a Global Community for Inclusive Growth
A key feature of the Gateway is its focus on integrated policymaking. The platform demonstrates how countries are linking employment, skills, enterprise development, social protection, and environmental sustainability to address multiple challenges through coordinated approaches.
Developed by the ILO and the International Training Centre of the ILO with financial support from Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the initiative aims to support stakeholders in at least ten countries by 2028.
The platform will soon expand with the introduction of a dedicated Policy Help Desk, offering tailored technical support and connecting users with a global community of policymakers and practitioners.
The ILO says the Gateway will help countries adapt successful policy experiences to local conditions while strengthening cooperation, knowledge-sharing, and inclusive economic transformation worldwide.
