Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment and Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Shobha Karandlaje, is leading the Indian delegation at the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) taking place in Geneva, Switzerland. As part of the conference engagements, she participated in the Coordination Group Meeting of the Global Coalition for Social Justice on 11 June 2026, where representatives from governments, international organizations, employers' groups and workers' bodies came together to discuss ways to create fairer and more inclusive labour systems across the world.
The meeting provided an opportunity for member countries to exchange perspectives on employment, social protection and economic development at a time when labour markets are undergoing significant changes due to technological advancements, shifting economic conditions and evolving workforce expectations.
Strengthening International Partnerships Through the ILO
The Global Coalition for Social Justice was established by the International Labour Organization in 2023 to encourage stronger cooperation among countries and institutions working towards social and economic progress. The platform focuses on translating policy commitments into practical action by bringing together governments, businesses, workers' organizations and development partners under a common framework.
During the meeting, Karandlaje interacted with ILO Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo, labour ministers from Bangladesh, Moldova, Brazil and Switzerland, the Vice Minister of Belgium, and several other international representatives. These discussions focused on shared challenges and opportunities in building labour markets that are more resilient, equitable and capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.
The gathering also highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts among countries to address issues related to employment generation, worker welfare, social security and responsible business practices in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
India Backs Inclusive Growth and Stronger Social Protection
India reiterated its commitment to working closely with the ILO and international partners to advance the goals of the Global Coalition for Social Justice. The country emphasized the importance of strengthening social protection systems, promoting decent work opportunities and supporting policies that contribute to inclusive economic growth.
The Indian delegation underlined the need for collaboration among governments, employers and workers to create labour markets that can respond effectively to emerging challenges while ensuring that economic progress benefits all sections of society. India also expressed its intention to contribute actively to the next phase of the Coalition's work through initiatives that encourage responsible business practices, expand social security coverage and foster international cooperation.
As discussions continue at the International Labour Conference, India's participation reflects its broader commitment to shaping policies that support both economic development and social well-being, while contributing to global efforts aimed at building fair, inclusive and resilient labour systems for the future.
