Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting in New Delhi to assess preparations for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026, which is scheduled to take place from July 3 to August 28. The meeting brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jammu and Kashmir administration, intelligence agencies, the Indian Army and Central Armed Police Forces to review security arrangements and ensure smooth conduct of the annual pilgrimage.

During the meeting, Shah reiterated the government's commitment to providing a safe and hassle-free experience for lakhs of devotees expected to undertake the yatra this year. He said that ensuring the security and comfort of pilgrims remains a top priority and directed all agencies to work in close coordination throughout the pilgrimage period.

Technology to Play a Bigger Role in Security

The Home Minister instructed security agencies to establish a strong and integrated security framework across the entire pilgrimage route. He emphasized the need to complement traditional security measures with modern technologies such as drones, CCTV surveillance systems and advanced monitoring tools that can help improve real-time situational awareness and response capabilities.

A multi-layered security grid involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces and other security agencies will be deployed along the route. Senior officers from different security forces will remain stationed at camps and key locations during the yatra to supervise arrangements and ensure quick decision-making whenever required.

The Home Minister also directed authorities to regulate the movement of pilgrim groups based on weather forecasts and prevailing conditions, recognising the challenging terrain and changing climate conditions in the region.

Focus on Pilgrim Services and Safety

Along with security measures, special attention is being given to essential services that support the pilgrimage. Authorities have been directed to ensure smooth arrangements for registration, accommodation, healthcare facilities and disaster management support throughout the yatra period.

Officials informed the meeting that local service providers and animals associated with the pilgrimage will be registered and issued QR code-enabled identity cards. Health and fitness camps will also be organised for animals used during the pilgrimage to ensure their well-being and suitability for the journey.

Shah also stressed that security arrangements should not be limited to the yatra route alone. Popular tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir must also remain safe and well-managed so that pilgrims and visitors can travel comfortably without facing inconvenience.

The government believes that a combination of advanced technology, coordinated security planning and improved pilgrim services will help ensure a secure and well-organised Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra 2026.
