Rajnath Singh Highlights Territorial Army's Expanding National Role

During the meeting, senior officials briefed committee members on the Territorial Army's responsibilities, achievements and future priorities.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has praised the Territorial Army for its growing contribution to India's security, disaster response and environmental conservation, describing the force as an important pillar in the country's journey towards becoming a developed nation.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi, Singh said the Territorial Army reflects the spirit of the "Citizen-Soldier" by enabling civilians to serve the nation while continuing their professional lives.

Citizen-Soldiers Strengthen National Security

During the meeting, senior officials briefed committee members on the Territorial Army's responsibilities, achievements and future priorities. Members of Parliament also shared suggestions to further strengthen the force and improve its operational effectiveness.

Singh said the Territorial Army creates a reserve of trained personnel who can be deployed quickly whenever the armed forces require additional support. He added that once members complete their service and return to civilian life, they continue to strengthen the connection between society and the military while encouraging more young people to consider a career in the armed forces.

Supporting Communities During Emergencies

The Territorial Army currently consists of around 44,400 personnel serving across 59 units. Singh described them as first responders who provide critical assistance during natural disasters and other emergencies. He acknowledged the force's contribution to rescue operations, relief work and medical assistance during the Kerala floods, the Odisha cyclone and the recent floods in Assam. Their ability to respond quickly has made them an important support system during major humanitarian crises.

Environmental Efforts Receive Recognition

The Defence Minister also highlighted the work of the Territorial Army's Ecological Task Forces, which have planted nearly 10 crore saplings across the country. He said the programme has achieved an impressive survival rate of 80 to 85 percent, making it a significant contribution to environmental conservation and climate action.

Singh noted that these initiatives support the Government's Mission LiFE and Panchamrit goals while promoting sustainable development. He also praised the Territorial Army personnel deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for expanding the reach of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and encouraging greater public participation.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence.
