German bakery blast: Events that led to conviction of Yasin Bhatkal in 2010 case

A trial court at Pune today framed charges against Yasin Bhatkal today, holding him guilty for a blast at German Bakery, an eatery in the Koregaon Park area in Pune, in February 2010.

Seventeen people were killed and 64 injured in the blast at German Bakery, an eatery in the Koregaon Park area in Pune, in February 2010.

Charges were framed against him under various sections of the IPC, Explosive Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, after he was produced before the court with heavy security. He was brought here from Delhi's Tihar jail Monday and produced before additional sessions judge K D Vadane. This was the first time since his arrest that Bhatkal has been brought to the Pune court.

Yaseen Bhatkal's younger brother, Abdul Samad Bhatkal, is also an accused in German blast case and was held from Mangalore International Airport in 2010.

Delhi Police has also expressed security concerns in bringing Bhatkal and has also filed an application demanding that further hearing be conducted via video-conference.

Bhatkal alias Mohammed Ahmed Siddibappa is also an accused in other cases linked to terrorism, he was earlier convicted in the 2013 Hyderabad twin blasts case and awarded death penalty by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in July 2018.

The NIA arrested Bhatkal, wanted in over 40 terror cases, from the Indo-Nepal border in 2013.
