Mohammed VI of Morocco has called for a renewal in dialogue with Algeria with a hope of breaking the stalemate obstructing the Maghreb unity project.
The internet users living in Morocco and Algeria have unveiled a campaign through social media to demand the reopening of the border connecting both countries. the Morocco-Algeria border has been closed since 1994. This new campaign surfaced after a video portraying Algerians and Moroccans celebrating together went viral on the social media podium.
King Mohammed VI opined that Morocco has reaffirmed its sincere commitment to the "policy of the outstretched hand towards our Algerian brothers, out of loyalty to the bonds rooted in brotherhood, religion, language and good-neighborliness that have always existed between the peoples of the two sister nations," as reported by Morocco World News.
The monarch, on the other hand, reiterated a statement of friendship he gave on November 6 last year during the 43rd anniversary of the Green March. King Mohammed VI invited Algeria to join a 'frank' and a 'direct dialogue' to overcome the political impasse between Algiers and Rabat with an objective to reinstate diplomatic ties and also reopen the borders between two nations. But Algeria continued to oppose the proposal of Morocco's monarch and did put question its territorial integrity by providing support and finance to the Polisario Front.
Currently, there is no official opposition from Algeria to the government of Morocco, which again encourages the monarch to renew his call to abolish the bitter diplomatic relations. He also recalled how Morocco's citizens celebrated Algeria's 2019 African Cup of Nations victory. He personally addressed a message to congratulate Algeria and Algerians over the victory. The King also reiterated Morocco's commitment to the UN political process for finding solutions to the Western Sahara conflict.
This day marks a very special day for Moroccans as the current monarch succeeded his father on July 30, 1999. His two-decade-long reign has seen the amazing transformation for Morocco. In fact, the country today serves as a shining example in North Africa. It is during his reign that the North African country has observed fundamental alterations, which will hold the country in good stead for years to come.
