Unnao case: Court suggests part proceedings in-camera at AIIMS

In a rare development, a Delhi court Monday suggested holding part of the proceedings, in-camera, at AIIMS in the 2017 Unnao rape case in which expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar is the key accused. After the in-camera hearing at the court on Monday, lawyers appearing in the case said that District Judge Dharmesh Sharma asked the counsel of the accused whether the statement of the rape survivor can be recorded at AIIMS hospital here, where she is admitted following an accident on July 28.

The court will pass the order on Tuesday. Advocates appearing for the accused said they oppose the suggestion saying it was not feasible to do so.

The court was hearing the case of alleged kidnapping and rape of the woman in 2017, when she was a minor, in which the statement of the uncle of the rape survivor was recorded in the vulnerable witness room. The examination of the uncle, who was produced from judicial custody, will continue on Tuesday.

Earlier, the statement of the mother of the rape survivor was recorded during in-camera proceedings. The court had earlier framed charges against Sengar and co-accused Shashi Singh in the case.
