Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed on Thursday the nomination of Nestor Foster to be an ambassador in Washington after backtracking on appointing his son, lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro. Foster is currently Brazil's charge d'affaires at the U.S. embassy.

"He's a well-liked person, an exemplary figure, he has everything to be successful," Bolsonaro told reporters before he left Tokyo for Beijing, the next stop on a tour of Asia and the Middle East. In July, the Brazilian president had said he would appoint his son to the U.S. embassy, a day after his son turned 35 - the minimum age for the job.

The president later reconsidered the appointment, asking his son to stay in Brazil to help manage a crisis in their right-wing Social Liberal Party (PSL). Eduardo, a federal lawmaker from São Paulo state, said he would give up his bid for the diplomatic posting to defend the government's agenda in Congress.
