MHADA Begins Evacuation of 82 Risky Buildings in Mumbai

MHADA has identified 82 cessed buildings in Mumbai as highly dangerous after a recent survey, initiating evacuation procedures. The buildings include 2,736 occupants. Notices have been served, and occupants are being relocated. Residents are urged to cooperate to ensure safety during the monsoon.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has pinpointed 82 cessed buildings in Mumbai's island city as 'highly dangerous' following its routine pre-monsoon evaluation, and it has begun the process of evacuating residents.

According to a statement from MHADA, this year's survey, conducted by the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board, identified buildings that were flagged as hazardous in the previous year. Among these, 43 structures were labeled 'highly dangerous' then as well.

The agency reports that the buildings accommodate 2,736 people, including 2,256 residential tenants and 480 non-residential ones. Eviction notices have been sent to 176 residential occupants, with 29 already moved to MHADA's transit facilities and 36 opting for alternative arrangements themselves.

Efforts are underway to ensure the rest of the residents vacate these premises, and MHADA is setting up the necessary arrangements for 2,102 individuals in transit camps. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with official directives for their own safety during the crucial monsoon season.

The authority has also advised all residents to promptly report any observed structural weaknesses or accidents in these elderly buildings. Additionally, the Board's control room is available for emergencies, alongside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's support services.
