The owners of business establishments and buildings should strictly adhere to safety norms to avoid major incidents of fire, a top West Bengal government official has said. Speaking at a Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) event on "Fire Safety Awareness and Business Sustainability", the Director-General (DG) of West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services, Jag Mohan said that sustainability of a business is ensured when a building is safeguarded against fire.

"The owners of business establishments and buildings should strictly abide by the fire safety rules to avoid any disaster and loss of life. If the owners of business establishments and buildings follow the fire safety norms, then they have nothing to worry about," Jag Mohan said on Friday. The state government is taking strong measures to prevent fire-related accidents, he said.

"With more matters coming under the ambit of the fire services, the department has decided that a building will not be regularised until fire safety measures are taken care of," he said. A common problem with old buildings in North and Central Kolkata is old wiring and therefore the owners of such buildings need to change such wiring, Jag Mohan said.
