ASI commits suicide at home

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house near here on Wednesday, police said. DGP Loknath Behera ordered probe by the Ernakulam Range DIG into the death of Babu P C, who was serving as ASI at the Thadiyittaparamb police station in Ernakulam rural police limits, after his friends alleged that he took his life due to mental torture by one of his superior officers.

The DGP directed the Ernakulam Range DIG to probe the circumstances and issues that forced the ASI to take the extreme step. Behera also directed the Ernakulam Rural SP to hand over the police investigation into the death to District Crime Branch DySP.

On Tuesday night, Babu had allegedly sent messages to his friends colleagues saying he was taking the extreme step due to harassment from his superior officer. According to police, his family members found Babu hanging at their home near Aluva in the morning.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved. This is the second incident of suicide by police personnel in Ernakulam rural police limits this month.

Earlier this month, an Additional Sub-Inspector Poulose John had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his residential quarters at Chengamanad near Aluva. PTI COR TGB BN BN.
