Make Kishtwar militancy-free once again: J-K DGP to security forces

In the backdrop of the increasing terror activities in Kishtwar township of Jammu and Kashmir, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh on Monday exhorted the security forces to go pro-active and make the hilly district militancy-free once again. Kishtwar was rocked by four terror attacks since November last year, but the security forces achieved a major success in the recent past by eliminating three hardcore Hizbul Mujahideen militants and arresting over a dozen others.

The district, which was declared terrorism-free over a decade ago, witnessed the revival of militant activities with the killing of a senior BJP leader and his brother in November. An RSS functionary and his police guard were killed in April this year. The district also witnessed two weapon snatching incidents in March and September. "We are dealing with a hostile neighbour (Pakistan) and we will have to foil its attempts...There are reports of infiltration from Pakistan and now recent encounters also prove that some terrorists have sneaked in," the DGP said addressing a joint meeting of the Army, police, civil and paramilitary officers in the town.

Emphasising upon the officers to maintain pressure on terrorists and exhorting all ranks to remain vigilant to maintain law and order and security of the area, Singh directed for "well organised and pro-active" operations against the terrorists, particularly in upper reaches, to increase the sense of security among the masses. He also impressed upon the police and other security forces to make Kishtwar militancy-free once again.

Complimenting the efforts of police and other security agencies for maintaining law and order in the district, the police chief said that it was due to close coordination and synergy among the security forces that recent success was achieved against the terrorists. Singh said Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor Satya Pal Malik have complimented the police and security forces for their success against terrorists in Doda-Kishtwar range.

He also emphasised for civic action programmes at large scale to earn more public trust. Besides reviewing the law and order situation in the district, the DGP, who was accompanied by Inspector General of Police, Jammu zone, Mukesh Singh, also met with the civil society delegations and addressed a joint 'darbar' of police and the CAPF, a police spokesman said.

He said Singh met the delegations of Muslims and Hindu communities of Kishtwar who promised to work together to maintain communal harmony, peace and amity in the district. The police chief thanked them for their cooperation in maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood in the area, the spokesman said.
