Mozambique news: Workers working for construction consortium again on strike

About 2,000 workers in the construction consortium who were building the resettlement town for people displaced from their homes in the Afungi Peninsula in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, by the natural gas liquefaction project, went on strike. The construction project is led by an Italian company CMC-Africa Austral.

Although the construction commenced during Q1 2018, multiple strikes earlier have been observed as the building workers are claiming that the CMC consortium has violated their rights. Now they have again called for a strike in protest against the employer's decision that there would be no interruption to the work over the Xmas and New Year period, as reported by AllAfrica.

After negotiations between the workers' trade union committee and the CMC managers, the employer yielded and it was agreed that the entire work force would be granted holidays from December 21 to January 6. Work would resume on January.

However, the reason for the recent strike is that they have reportedly suffered unjustified cuts up to US $48 to their wages. They have claimed that they have not been given any satisfactory or reasonable explanation.
