Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister has given a call for a smooth referendum for the making of newly proposed region (named Oti Region) scheduled for Thursday, December 27, 2018.

Oti Region, which is a newly proposed region in Ghana, will have administrative and governmental legislature like any of the ten already existing regions in the country. Oti Region is said to be carved out of the northern part of the Volta Region (one of Ghana’s ten administrative regions with Ho designated as its capital) and will be in fulfilment of a campaign promise made by New Patriotic Party.

According to Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, there was a requirement for all to support the creation of the new region since it was a praiseworthy cause to witness developments in the Oti enclave.

Yao Lesta also gave an assurance that measures had already been taken to ensure maximum security and referendum would take place smoothly, peacefully and successfully. He further said, while addressing the second meeting of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), that the creation and of the proposed Oti Region is mainly for developmental purposes and absolutely not for any other reasons, as reported by Graphic Online.

He further opined that the region had been peaceful, but it has witnessed sporadic occurrences of crimes and a number of chieftaincy including land disputes that challenged the security.

The data received from Statistics, Research and Information Directorate of the regional office of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture show that the Volta Region recorded higher yields in rice in recent years in comparison to other regions. He further said that the rehabilitation of small-scale irrigation facilities had been accomplished to enhance production. The all-year-round cultivation of rice and vegetables is also ensured.
