Over a week back, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was removed from the University of Ghana's campus. This is recently done after the protests from students and faculty who argue that Mahatma Gandhi considered Africans 'inferior'. Now Ghana has softened its stand on the issue and agreed to reinstall statue at a key location in the capital city Accra.
Ghanaian government has assured the government of India that the statue of Indian Independent Leader Mahatma Gandhi will be inaugurated by a Minister in the local government somewhere in Accra. The previous statue was inaugurated by India's former President Pranab Mukherjee two years back, and it was an aim to strengthen the relationship between two countries.
"India and Ghana share special partnership since the days of decolonisation. Kwame Nkrumah, the undisputed leader of Ghana, was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. There were some voices in Ghana based on literature. But the Ghana government felt that the issue cannot be allowed derail partnership," an unnamed person related to the matter said to ET.
The recent incident in University of Ghana's campus is significant in the backdrop of India's widespread goodwill in Africa, ongoing infrastructure and capacity building projects amid Modi government's push in the continent, ET noted.
