Rwanda this time records significant gains on multiple fronts on the basis of promoting gender equality. As of 2018, Rwanda ranked in the top five countries for gender equality.

A new report on the current status of gender equality shows that Rwanda has achieved unprecedented progress in gender equality on social and economic transformation including transformational governance in the last 25 years. However, the report also reveals some prevailing challenges.

“Rwanda is strongly committed to promoting gender equality. In our assessments as GMO we find that different institutions have put in place gender sector strategies. This really shows commitments in place to promote gender equality in our country, the Chief Gender Monitor, Rose Rwabuhihi opined, as reported by The New Times.

The research on current status on gender equality shows huge achievements in promoting gender in multiple sectors including health, economic, education and governance. There has been consistent stability of gender parity in the education sector. Even the report shows the number of enrolment of girls in science studies is quite impressive. The number is also increasing as the girls are enrolling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) due to multiple initiatives taken by Miss Geek, TechKobwa, and WeCode programmes, among others.

The government of Rwanda has also ensured that the traditionally marginalized women should get access to finance, get employment opportunities in both private and public offices and own lands. They also need to participate in science education that was previously deemed for men.

The Prime Minister of Rwanda, Edouard Ngirente, while closing Women’s Celebration Month on March 31, said that the country would not stop promoting gender equality and empowering women in all the fields to make socio-economic development and transformation.
