EU’s Michel to invite Armenian, Azerbaijani leaders to Brussels

The President of the European Council Charles Michel will invite the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders for a meeting in Brussels by the end of the month, he told reporters on the margins of a European Political Community summit in Granada.

The invitation comes after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pulled out of an EU-brokered meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, scheduled for Thursday during the Granada summit. Michel has been overseeing a peace process between the two Caucasus countries.

The meeting had been aimed at preventing any further escalation and restoring dialogue after Azerbaijan last month seized back control of a region populated by ethnic Armenians, prompting more than 100,000 of them to flee to Armenia.
