ENPO Faces Show-cause Notice for Poll Boycott: Nagaland's ULB Elections Under Scrutiny

The Election Commission on Saturday issued a show-cause notice to the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) regarding its decision to abstain from the forthcoming Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls in the state.

On April 29, the commission notified the election schedule for three municipal councils and 36 town councils, with the elections slated for June 26—marking the state's first ULB polls since 2004.

On May 16, the ENPO, which represents seven Naga tribes across six districts, announced its boycott of the local body polls, renewing its decade-long demand for a Frontier Nagaland Territory. The ENPO claims persistent neglect of these districts since 2010.

The EC pointed out that the ENPO's public abstention announcement might infringe on the electorate's rights to participate freely and fearlessly in the electoral process.

The State Election Commission has instructed the ENPO to respond to the show-cause notice promptly.
