Independent candidate Wanglam Sawin clinched a remarkable victory in the Khonsa East assembly constituency, overcoming Kamrang Tesia of the BJP by a margin of 2,216 votes, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India.

The vote counting for 50 assembly seats in the northeastern state commenced at 6 am on Sunday, revealing an early lead for Sawin.

Notably, Sawin had secured the same seat in the 2019 Assembly elections under the BJP banner. However, this time he ran as an independent after being denied a party ticket.

Meanwhile, the BJP had already claimed 10 seats unopposed in the 60-member assembly, the elections for which were conducted alongside the Lok Sabha polls on April 19.
