In an unexpected turn of events, the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is staring at one of its worst electoral defeats in Uttar Pradesh, trailing behind in all 80 Lok Sabha seats.
According to the latest data from the Election Commission, the BSP has garnered a mere 1.92 per cent of the votes across India and 9.16 per cent in Uttar Pradesh.
At 2:00 PM, the Samajwadi Party has taken the lead in 37 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in this politically crucial state, while their INDIA bloc ally Congress is ahead in seven. The BJP maintains its stronghold, leading in 33 seats, with allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal (Sonelal) leading in one seat each.
Significantly, Chandrashekhar of Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) is leading from the Nagina (SC) seat with a margin of over 1.09 lakh votes against his BJP rival.
The latest figures are a stark contrast to previous elections, where the BSP enjoyed significant successes, notably winning 21 seats in the 2009 polls, 10 seats in 2019, and commanding a presence in 14 seats during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections.
Its 2022 performance follows an equally disappointing outcome in the UP Assembly elections, where only one BSP candidate emerged victorious.
