Kalpana Soren, the wife of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, has taken a lead of approximately 26,000 votes over her nearest BJP rival Dilip Kumar Verma in the Gandey assembly bypoll, according to election officials.

Kalpana's initial struggle saw her trailing by 2,242 votes. The Gandey seat was left vacant after the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. The by-election's vote counting is expected to conclude in 24 rounds.

The election on May 20 saw 2.17 lakh of 3.16 lakh voters casting their votes. Kalpana's political career was ignited during the JMM's 51st Foundation Day in Giridih district, amidst allegations of conspiracies targeting her husband's coalition government since 2019. Hemant Soren's arrest on January 31 in a money laundering case linked to alleged land fraud led to his resignation. Kalpana has actively campaigned for the INDIA bloc in Jharkhand, making notable appearances at rallies and publicly pledging to fight against injustice and oppression post her husband's arrest.
