In a nail-biting contest, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the principal opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) are running neck-and-neck in the Uttar Pradesh assembly bypolls, each leading in two of the four seats up for grabs. According to the Election Commission trends at 3 pm, BJP candidates are ahead in Lucknow East and Dadraul, while SP candidates have a lead in Gainsari and Duddhi (SC).
OP Srivastava of the BJP has established a significant margin over his closest contender, Mukesh Kumar of the Congress, in the Lucknow East seat with a lead of 75,581 votes. In a similar race, Arvind Kumar Singh of the BJP is ahead of SP’s Avadhesh Kumar Verma by 52,477 votes in Dadraul, Shahjahanpur district.
Contrasting these battles, SP’s Rakesh Kumar Yadav is leading BJP’s Shailesh Kumar Singh 'Shailu' by 5,096 votes in Gainsari, Balrampur district, while SP’s Vijay Singh is ahead by 27,882 votes over BJP’s Saravan Kumar in the Duddhi (SC) assembly seat in Sonbhadra district. The bypolls, held on May 13, were necessitated due to deaths and disqualifications of previous MLAs.
