Left Parties Show Marginal Improvement in 2024 Elections but Face Existential Battle
The Left parties have shown a slight improvement in the 2024 general elections, securing victories in at least eight seats. Despite this, their overall vote share remains relatively unchanged. The CPI(M) and the CPI performed better than in 2019 but still face significant challenges to regain their former strength in Indian politics.

In a closely monitored 2024 general election, the Left parties have managed a modest resurgence, securing at least eight seats. This performance, while an improvement over the dismal 2019 showing, hasn’t significantly bolstered their overall vote share.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), contesting 52 seats, has leads on four, with one close contest in Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, it’s ahead in Madurai and Dindigul, with a notable lead in Rajasthan's Sikar. The Communist Party of India, with 30 candidates, maintained its 2019 tally with wins in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur and Nagapattinam.
Despite these gains, the Left’s influence remains limited. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury criticized exit poll inaccuracies, while CPI's D. Raja indicated a rejection of the BJP's policies. The Left parties continue a long walk back from their peak influence in Indian polity.
