Five years ago, Uddhav Thackeray seemed a reluctant politician burdened by Bal Thackeray's legacy. However, he reinvented himself and Shiv Sena after parting ways with the BJP and aligning with Congress and NCP.
Under Thackeray's leadership, Shiv Sena transformed from an aggressive Hindutva party to a more liberal outfit, courting Muslims, Dalits, and non-Maharashtrians. Though mocked as a 'work from home' chief minister, he connected with people via Facebook live during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June 2022, Thackeray faced a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde and resigned without a trust vote, sparking criticism. Despite losing his position, party name, and symbol, he bounced back, becoming the opposition figurehead in the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
Thackeray proved his mettle by winning seat-sharing agreements and three out of four Mumbai seats, but struggled in the Konkan region. With the Congress improving its seat count and the MVA coalition securing 30 seats, Thackeray now faces a bigger test in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.
