The 83-year-old electoral battle-hardened politician remains a crucial figure in the anti-BJP opposition alliance at the national level and a key architect of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) performance in the recent polls provides a fresh impetus in the state ahead of the October assembly elections.
