South African Minister Zizi Kodwa, a prominent figure in the African National Congress (ANC), was apprehended and appeared in court on Wednesday amid bribery allegations. The incident occurred during a critical period as the ANC convened to discuss their next steps following an election impasse.

Kodwa, who holds the position of Sports, Arts and Culture Minister, is accused of accepting bribes amounting to around USD 90,000, according to police reports. He appeared in a Johannesburg courtroom alongside another individual implicated in the case. Kodwa has declared his intention to plead not guilty.

The 54-year-old is part of the ANC's National Working Committee, which met on Tuesday to deliberate on potential coalition strategies after the party lost its 30-year parliamentary majority in last week's elections. The ANC is yet to disclose potential partners for a coalition government.

In 2021, a judicial inquiry into government corruption named Kodwa in allegations related to his tenure as ANC national spokesperson and deputy minister of state security. The police claim that some of the bribe money was used to acquire a luxury SUV.

The corruption scandal is believed to be a significant factor in the ANC's recent electoral losses, as public trust waned. The party received only 40% of the vote, marking the first time it has lost its majority and now requires a coalition to govern.
