In a significant judicial ruling, the Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki, along with his brother and three associates, has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment. The charges stem from an incident in which they set ablaze a woman's house in a bid to seize her land.
Law enforcement authorities had initially charged Solanki, his brother Rizwan, and nearly four dozen others with rioting and arson 19 months ago. The session MP-MLA court under Judge Satyendra Nath Tripathi delivered the guilty verdict on Monday, with the sentence announced on Friday.
District Government Counsel Dileep Awasthi confirmed that the convicts would each face a fine of Rs 30,500, failing which an additional three-month jail term would be imposed. Irfan Solanki, a four-time MLA first elected in 2007, comes from a political lineage with his father, Mushtaq Solanki, having served as a two-time MLA from Kanpur's Arya Nagar constituency.
