In an unprecedented democratic exercise, nearly 450 million citizens across the EU have wrapped up a four-day polling process to elect 720 members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The event follows closely on the heels of India's extensive general elections, marking a significant period for global democracies.

Polling booths in the EU countries closed by 9 pm local time on Sunday, marking the close of the world's second-largest elections after India's. Counting of votes is set to begin, with results expected to start pouring in from Monday.

Bulgaria added another layer of complexity to the elections, as the country simultaneously held its National Assembly vote. The Bulgarian electorate, already weary from multiple elections since 2021, expressed hope for a more stable coalition post-elections. Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Vice-President Iliana Iotova emphasized the importance of forming a government that prioritizes public interest.
