Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has resigned as the MLA of Soreng-Chakung assembly constituency, opting to retain his seat in Rhenock. His resignation, accepted by Speaker M N Sherpa, follows the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha's (SKM) sweeping victory in the recent elections, where they won 31 out of 32 constituencies.
Tamang's decision aligns with the electoral mandate that requires a member elected from two constituencies to vacate one within 14 days of the results. Citing Section 70 of the Representation of People Act, 1951, he announced, 'I apologise to the people of Soreng-Chakung as I step aside to allow an honest party functionary to serve as your legislator.'
In related news, Tamang's wife, Krishna Kumari Rai, also resigned from her MLA position in Namchi-Singhithang just a day after taking oath. She had secured a significant victory against SDF candidate Bimal Rai in the recent assembly polls.
