India expresses strong disapproval of the Canadian parliament's observance of a one-minute silence for Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The External Affairs Ministry condemned Canada's action and reiterated its concerns about Canada providing political space to anti-India elements. In a move likely to further strain bilateral relations, India condemned the Canadian parliament for observing a one-minute silence in memory of Khalistan extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Friday.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed India's firm opposition to any gesture supporting extremism and violence. Nijjar, labeled a terrorist by India, was assassinated in Surrey, British Columbia, last June.
Relations between the two nations were already tense following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's September allegations of Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing, which New Delhi dismissed as 'absurd.' India continues to press Canada to eliminate political support for anti-India elements championing extremism from Canadian soil.
