National Conference MP-elect Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tender an apology, should reports of government employees being 'forced' to walk barefoot during the International Yoga Day event prove true.

Prime Minister Modi led the Yoga Day event at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on Friday morning.

Mehdi, who secured a parliamentary seat from Srinagar, posted a video on X showing participants walking barefoot in incessant rains.

'Reports and videos have surfaced indicating that employees were coerced into walking barefoot for an event organized for the Prime Minister. This displays a blatant disregard for employee respect and basic rights. Such behavior is unacceptable,' Mehdi, a prominent Shia leader, stated.

He emphasized that if these reports hold true, the Prime Minister 'should apologize for this disrespectful treatment of the employees'.
