In a significant political shake-up, senior BRS MLA and ex-Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy has switched allegiance to the ruling Congress party. The announcement came on Friday, marking a major setback for the BRS.
Telangana Chief Minister and state Congress President A Revanth Reddy personally visited Srinivas Reddy at his residence, asserting that the BRS veteran joined Congress to advocate for the farming community's welfare. The Chief Minister emphasized that the government would actively seek Srinivas Reddy's suggestions on farmers' issues and assured him of due respect within the party.
Srinivas Reddy, appreciating Revanth Reddy's pro-farmer initiatives, said he joined Congress to bolster the Chief Minister's efforts to address farmers' problems. This defection adds to the growing list of senior leaders who have exited the BRS, including Kadiam Srihari, Danam Nagender, Tellam Venkat Rao, Hyderabad Mayor Vijaya Laxmi R Gadwal, and MLC Patnam Mahender Reddy. Notably, Srinivas Reddy has a long political history, having previously been with the TDP and the BRS (formerly TRS) during the Telangana statehood movement. He served as assembly speaker from 2018 to 2023 and holds considerable influence in the Nizamabad district.
