Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday engaged in comprehensive discussions with visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, aiming to bolster cooperation across a spectrum of fields such as trade and connectivity.
This visit, commencing on Friday, is the inaugural bilateral state visit by a foreign leader following the recent Lok Sabha elections in India.
'PM @narendramodi extended a warm welcome to PM Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh at Hyderabad House ahead of their bilateral discussions,' revealed external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
Since 2019, the two leaders have convened ten times, forging significant advances in their bilateral relationship.
In the days leading up to the discussions, Prime Minister Hasina paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and received a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Officials indicated that Modi and Hasina aimed to infuse new dynamism into bilateral ties, particularly focusing on trade, connectivity, and energy sectors.
Hasina was among the prominent leaders attending Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony on June 9, representing India's neighborhood and the Indian Ocean region.
In recent years, strategic ties between India and Bangladesh have seen remarkable growth.
Bangladesh, an essential ally under India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy, cooperates extensively in areas such as security, commerce, energy, and defense.
India's largest development partner, Bangladesh, benefits significantly from New Delhi's commitment under the Line of Credit.
The neighboring nation stands as India's largest trade partner in South Asia, while India is a major export destination in Asia for Bangladesh.
Both countries share a vast 4096.7 km border, the longest land boundary that India has with any neighbor, fostering active cooperation in areas of policing, anti-corruption, and combatting various illicit activities.
