Tamil Nadu Pushes for Caste-Based Census Resolution

Tamil Nadu's government is set to propose a resolution in the Legislative Assembly, calling for the central government to swiftly conduct a caste-based census alongside the general census, according to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

This announcement came in response to PMK legislator G.K. Mani's call for a caste-wise census to facilitate a 10.5 percent reservation for the Vanniyar community. Chief Minister Stalin emphasized that resolution of the issue hinges on the central government's action.

Highlighting legal challenges faced by similar initiatives, Stalin urged cooperation with political allies to ensure the successful implementation of a nationwide caste census, which would lay the groundwork for state-level reservation policies.
