Fraud Trial of Exiled Chinese Tycoon Guo Wengui Nears Conclusion
The fraud trial of Guo Wengui, an exiled Chinese businessman, is concluding. Prosecutors accuse Guo of deceiving followers out of millions for his luxury lifestyle, while his defense calls him a critic of China's Communist Party. Guo has pleaded not guilty to several charges including racketeering.
The fraud trial of Guo Wengui moved closer to its conclusion on Wednesday as a prosecutor alleged that the exiled Chinese tycoon swindled his followers out of millions for personal luxuries. Meanwhile, Guo's defense lawyer characterized him as a misunderstood critic of China's Communist regime.
During closing arguments at the Manhattan federal court, Prosecutor Ryan Finkel stated that Guo raised over $1 billion by assuring his social media followers they would not incur losses by joining his investment and cryptocurrency schemes from 2018 to 2023. Finkel presented videos of Guo promoting these investments, including one in which Guo appeared on a yacht wearing sunglasses.
'It was him, this man, who spouted devious lies to trick his followers into giving him money,' Finkel said, pointing at the defendant. 'They forked over their money to participate in these quote unquote investment opportunities.' On the other hand, Guo's lawyer Sidhardha Kamaraju argued that Guo's extravagant displays of wealth were part of his client's political critique of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and urged the jurors to refrain from rushing to judgment.
