Spanish far-right party Vox has threatened to bring down coalition governments with the center-right People's Party (PP) in a sharp protest against a plan to transfer 400 underage migrants from the Canary Islands to continental Spain.
The PP, which currently governs five regions in partnership with Vox, had agreed to a central government proposal to relocate some of the 6,000 unaccompanied minors who had recently arrived on the islands from West Africa.
'Today the People's Party has blown up regional government deals by welcoming 400 underage migrants,' Vox leader Santiago Abascal wrote on X. He vowed that Vox would not support the PP in any capacity to 'scam, loot, and endanger Spaniards.'
Vox's threat casts uncertainty over whether the PP can maintain control in the five regions where they govern jointly. This situation may lead to by-elections, further destabilizing the political landscape.
In Spain's highly decentralized system, regional governments manage crucial sectors such as healthcare and education. The central government's migrant transfer plan is aimed at alleviating pressure on the Canary Islands, which saw a dramatic increase in migrant arrivals this year.
