Nepal's Political Landscape Reshapes as K.P. Sharma Oli to Lead New Coalition Government

Nepal is on the brink of significant political change, as K.P. Sharma Oli is set to lead a new coalition government. This development follows the ousting of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who lost a parliamentary vote of confidence last Friday, capping a volatile 20-month administration.

Nepal, politically unstable since abolishing its 239-year-old monarchy in 2008, is keenly observed by neighboring China and India. Oli's incoming government will be the 14th since the monarchy's dissolution. Both China and India have substantial investments in Nepal and are vying for influence in the region.

Dahal, a former Maoist rebel leader, required support from at least 138 members in the 275-member house but fell short, securing only 63 votes, against 194 votes, with one abstention. The opposition UML, led by Oli, forged an alliance with the centrist Nepali Congress, ensuring a majority poised to govern even as Dahal warned of potential regression and authoritarianism in his final speech.
