In a sweeping victory, the Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, captured all nine of its contested seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. The results, announced on Friday evening, followed closely held polls earlier in the day.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed five seats, while both the Shiv Sena, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured two seats each. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) managed to win two seats with Congress candidate Pradnya Satav and Milind Narvekar from Shiv Sena (UBT) being declared victorious.
This election was necessitated by the expiration of the terms of 11 members of the legislative council on July 27. The election's voting base was the 288-member legislative assembly, which currently has a strength of 274 members. Notably, each successful candidate had to secure a minimum of 23 first-preference votes to win their seats.
