French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and his government by the end of Tuesday, following an inconclusive snap election. According to government sources, the current government will continue in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is appointed.

The caretaker government will handle daily affairs in the euro zone's second-largest economy but will not be able to submit new laws, including the annual budget, experts say. Its responsibilities will include ensuring the smooth running of the Olympics starting on July 26. “Handling current affairs means implementing measures already decided and managing emergencies that arise. No more, no less,” stated Mathieu Disant, a law professor at Paris’ Panthéon-Sorbonne university.

Strict rules on the separation of powers in France usually prevent ministers from serving as lawmakers simultaneously. However, their resignation allows Attal and other cabinet members to take part in the election of the assembly's president when parliament convenes on Thursday. This election holds significant political importance amid the unclear future of the government, as no party has secured an absolute majority.
