French Green Leader Calls for Unity Amid Left-Wing Infighting

French Green leader Marine Tondelier urged unity among left-wing party leaders on Wednesday, expressing disgust at the ongoing infighting over selecting a joint candidate for prime minister. Despite the leftist New Popular Front alliance's initial post-election excitement, differences between its key parties have stalled progress. President Macron's coalition efforts further complicate the scenario.

French Green leader Marine Tondelier called for unity among left-wing party leaders on Wednesday, decrying the ongoing infighting over selecting a joint candidate for prime minister. Expressing her frustration, Tondelier told France 2 television, 'I'm angry, I'm disgusted, I'm fed up and I'm sorry for the spectacle we're giving the French.'

The leftist New Popular Front alliance, which won a surprising election victory on July 7, initially promised to form a government and name a prime minister within days. However, no progress has been made, leading to a shift in focus in trying to agree on a candidate for president of the new national assembly, which convenes for the first time on Thursday.

Tondelier highlighted that the political deadlock was mainly due to disputes between the alliance's moderate Socialists and the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI). Meanwhile, President Emmanuel Macron has tasked outgoing prime minister Gabriel Attal with brokering a larger coalition to secure a 'solid' majority, putting further pressure on moderate left-wing factions to distance themselves from LFI.
