US President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing "mild symptoms", according to a statement from the White House on Thursday.
"After his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19. He is vaccinated, boosted, and is experiencing mild symptoms," said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Biden will return to Delaware to self-isolate while continuing to fulfill all presidential duties. Regular updates on his condition will be provided by the White House.
The president was initially scheduled to speak at the Unidos event in Las Vegas but will remain in isolation following CDC guidelines.
"His symptoms remain mild, with normal respiratory rate, temperature, and pulse oximetry readings. He has received his first dose of Paxlovid and will self-isolate at his Rehoboth home," the White House added.
Presidential physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor noted that Biden presented with mild upper respiratory symptoms, including runny nose and a non-productive cough. A point of care test confirmed the positive COVID-19 result.
