Vietnam's Transformational Leader Nguyen Phu Trong Passes Away

Vietnam's Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong has died at the age of 80, state media reported on Friday. Trong had held the nation's most powerful position for 13 years.

State media, citing Trong's medical team, confirmed he passed away early Friday due to 'old age and serious illness.'

President To Lam assumed Trong's responsibilities on Thursday as the aging leader focused on medical treatment. Trong, educated in the Soviet Union, had been the pivotal figure in Vietnam's Communist regime since 2011 and secured a rare third term in 2021, underscoring his political dominance. In recent months, his public appearances had become increasingly scarce due to his frail health.

The party must decide if Lam will serve as acting general secretary until the next Congress in 2026 or elect a new leader earlier. Trong's legacy includes a 2017 anti-corruption drive, dubbed the 'blazing furnace,' which implicated hundreds of officials, including high-profile resignations. Lam, integral to that campaign, was appointed president in May following accusations against his predecessor.
