National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah on Sunday criticized the delay in assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, arguing that the recent spike in terrorist attacks should not be used as an excuse for postponement. He noted that elections were held even in 1996 when militancy was at its peak in the region.

Abdullah questioned the rationale behind delaying the elections, insisting that doing so would mean bowing to terrorist forces, undermining the sacrifices made by security personnel. He appealed to the Supreme Court, which has set a deadline of September 30 for conducting the polls, to ensure the elections proceed as planned.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of a public rally in Samba district's Gurha Slathia, Abdullah also criticized Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for delaying a high-level meeting to address the rising terror incidents. He argued that under the current administration, the situation has deteriorated and that security and development in Jammu and Kashmir have both been compromised.
